You can put 256 in both the upper and the lower
slots, but the reality is that some machines read
the entire amount of 256 MB in teh lower slot and
some do not; they read only 128MB of that even
though there is a 256MB stick in the slot. So you
can put in 512, but you may get either 512 or
384MB, depending on the whim of that particular machine.

Yes, the Rev A and B are listed as having 256MB as
max memory because the single 256MB sticks (making
the max of 512MB) were unavailable at the time
those machines were the top of the home consumer
line. 256 max, or two 128 sticks, was the highest
available memory for them at that time.
