Listers, First, thanks in advance for considering this question since it deals with an iBook, not iMac, problem.
My niece's iBook (late 2001 model) has a bad hard drive. It will not boot from the HD. I've tried Disk First Aid, Disk Warrior and Tech Tool Deluxe to detect the problem and repair it. Physical tests of the hardware by Disk Warrior and Tech Tool come up clean. They all say the volume is damaged, but none of them have been able to fix it. Disk Warrior (running in OS 9) says after trying to repair it for awhile there is not enough memory to continue. But I am unable to increase the memory given to Disk Warrior -- it does not register the change. Tech Tool Deluxe (running in OS 9) eventually says that there is an extension conflict and to restart without extensions. But the iBook will not start up without extensions. Tech Tool Deluxe (in OS X) is very interesting. It ran all night trying to repair the volume, but only got part way through Step 2 of 3 in the repair process in all that time. It was still making progress, but very slowly and it was constantly accessing the CD-ROM drive. I calculated that at the current rate of progress it was making that it would take at least a week to complete. I figured the constant accessing of the CD-ROM drive for a whole week would kill the CD-ROM drive so I stopped it. After that, I tried to re-format the HD using Disk Tool, but could not get that to work either. I tried rebuilding the desktop, resetting the PRAM, starting in Safe mode, and starting in Single-User mode, but it will not start with any of those. I also tried resetting the PMU. No difference. I'm out of bullets. Does anyone have any other ideas to try? I imagine we could just take this HD out and replace it, but I don't want to do that myself. I've replaced iMac HD's but it seems a lot more complicated on iBooks. Plus this isn't my own computer, so I'd feel horrible if I screwed up and ruined it for my niece. One other thing about this particular computer. Almost since the very first time my niece powered up this iBook, she has had problems. The logic board has been replaced three times by Apple!! After the most recent replacement in March, it finally seemed to be working correctly until this HD problem, which started in late May. My niece, who just graduated from college and has minimal $$ to throw into this iBook, is at her wits end. She is considering writing a letter to Apple to detail all her problems and ask them to declare this iBook an "Official Lemon" and give her a new one. Is there any chance of that tactic being successful? Thanks for any suggestions. Mike -- The iMac List is sponsored by <http://lowendmac.com/> and...
