One other thing about this particular computer. Almost since the very first
time my niece powered up this iBook, she has had problems. The logic board
has been replaced three times by Apple!! After the most recent replacement
in March, it finally seemed to be working correctly until this HD problem,
which started in late May. My niece, who just graduated from college and
has minimal $$ to throw into this iBook, is at her wits end. She is
considering writing a letter to Apple to detail all her problems and ask
them to declare this iBook an "Official Lemon" and give her a new one. Is
there any chance of that tactic being successful?
I've heard other nightmare stories about similar age iBooks. One of my friends in London has one that has creaky hinges, and a guy i know in the US has had similar problems with the hard disk killing itself, and still has now. I think it is a function of the massive volume of iBooks Apple shipped that year combined with a design flaw that only seems to manifest itself in a small percentage, probably as a result bad quality control. I strongly suspect Apple designed it out in the 600MHz revision.
When applying for a warranty return (I presume she has an AppleCare policy on it or she'd unlikely to get very far) Apple do make a point of telling you it is a 'Portable Computer that should be use on a hard surface, not on your lap'. I know for a fact this is a legal get-out, but my US friend had one of many replacements that was overheating on the hard disk portion of the iBook. I strongly suspect it has some sort of heat dissipation issue that requires it to be use in a well-ventilated situation, which would eventually cause the hard disk to die, as well as sections of the logic board.
If they won't replace it and it's under warranty then you have a lot of ammunition, if it's not under warranty but it's caused a lot of grief and lost time then there is always a small claims court...
