Michael,
Thanks for your suggestions---I'll pass them on. In answer to some of your
points:

>1. Check with the school=B9s IT department. Some of the larger >state schools
>offer M$ office to their students
>at no additional cost to the student. You
>could pick up Office X.

We're in the UK. There is a programme where we can get Office for about
120 (which is how I bought Office '98 3 years ago), but there's no guarantee
that this problem would go away.

>2. Call the school=B9s graduate office. Ask if they keep a >dissertation
format template. This was a life saver for me. If >they do, it will probably
be for
>Wintel, but a few prog
>ressive places produce ones for Macintosh.

I'll try that, although I've already tried copying Normal.dot from the Mac
to the PC

4. Try inserting the Excel into the Word document.

The final thesis will run to about 180pages, containing of the order of
50graphs. Since the graphs contain 1000's of data points each, the resulting
Word Doc would be _massive_ and not do either machine any good --- believe
me, I've already suggested this one and had it dismissed.

>5. Try converting the graph into an art document such as a TIFF. This has
>worked for me, but it will change the fonts size if you enlarge or reduce
>the picture of the graph.

The graph is inserted as a picture already--- that was the original problem
:-)
Initially they looked the same on both platforms, then just yesterday, the
y-axis labels are missing when the document is viewed on Office 97 on the
PC. As far as I can tell, nothing was changed from one day to the next---
"it just stopped working"

>hy does your SO need to transfer her dissertation from Macintosh to Wintel?

The printer that we have at home is a slow inkjet --- here there is a brace
of fast laser printers that produce better quality results (essential for
the final copy, which must be bound and then go and live in the Library).
Additionally, her supervisor wants to be able to review her work on his
Wintel PC at work...

Kind Regards,
Tim
