Actually you don't. I got it with an iMac and it still had iTunes 3.x and iMovie 3.0.0. Maybe my iMac software pack was out of date, but both applications required substantial downloadable updates. Anyway, I digress :).
I'm not sure that iDVD will work with your external Superdrive. You may want to check around the DealMac forum or other forums to make sure before spending the money.
Try the Drive Compatibility Database at <http://www.xlr8yourmac.com> . Lots of real reports from real people on how well drives do/don't work in various machines and it's totally searchable by a large number of criteria, such as interface, machine, OS version, etc. I bought a Combo drive for my G3 based on the info there and it was spot on.
