Anyway, I am curious to know if anyone has any ideas on what commonly
causes PAV board failure or what steps, if any, can be taken to
prevent future failures. Any adivce is appreciated. Thanks.

Being a full time Apple Service Technician I would LOVE to give you some
insight as to why PAV boards commonly fail. Most often it is a power
fluctuation or a spike that causes it. I used to work in the San
Francisco Bay Area...and we saw very few PAV failures in our shop. Now
I work in the Tampa Bay Area...and every other iMac has a blown Modem,
Ethernet port or PAV board if it's an older model. My welcome to the
lightning capital of the world is virtually drowning in power related
failures. People think that surge protectors actually *do* something.

Put a UPS in front of your system and you will be fine. UPS not surge
protector. The PAV boards come in 3 flavors. HH, LG and Universal.
The CRT's come as HH or LG. You can differentiate by looking at the
left side of the CRT on the inside of the case. If there is a large
black sticker (covering a logo) then it was Manufactured by LG. The PAV
board has to match the CRT, and if the tech replaces your PAV with the
UNI version then he/she has to set it with a switch to the right version
or it won't function properly.

Any more questions feel free to ask...
