OK well I hooked up the imac to a separate monitor. At least now it stays powered on. BUT, all I get now is a 'Folder' with two flashing icons, a Mac happy face, and then a question mark '?'. I've never had this particular one before on a desktop.
I tried zapping pram but that didn't help. Tried booting from a imac OS CD but no change there. Tried holding down the 'c' key and the other command-option-shift-delte method, no luck. Of course that could mean the cd rom is bad but then again, the drive doesn't boot either. Is there another method of booting from cd on these? Am I supposed to have any kind of light coming from the cd rom on these? I did remove the drive and verify there is an OS on it. But since it won't boot from cd either, I guess something else is going on. Another interesting little (possibly meaningless) symptom, simply by touching the power key on the keyboard, the computer immediately shuts down w/o asking me. Also, if I merely bypassed the monitor, am I still not using the imac video card?
