Of course, nobody (including Apple) is forcing you to upgrade and buy Panther - nor any of the other upgrades you paid for in the past.
But they ARE! have you SEEN the coolness that is Panther? OMG, no one could resist! It's impossible! Must Buy!
(I know, I know, but I've had a chance to play with it and let me tell you, the step from OS X PB to 10.2 is equivalent to the step from 10.2.6 to Panther, honest).
Why should they offer discounts ? It is not like Jaguar will no longer work
now that Panther is available. You could still continue using your Mac
without Panther and manage just fine.
I just hope that people who buy machines now will be able to get Panther for "free"<1> 'cuz my in-laws need a new iMac or an emac _NOW_<2>
<1> Apple's value of free is $20. <2> see next post
