First off, 10.1 was by no means useless. Second, it was free.

10.1 was NOT free to all of us who upgraded old computers from 9.1

10.1 was a free upgrade to those of us who bought 10.0, therefore it was free. If you waited until 10.1 to come out before buying OS X it doesn't change that 10.1 was free.
