Hi everyone, new listmember here.... I've semi-definitely decided to buy
a new eMac. Now the next question I have to decide is whether I should
buy one with a lot of RAM already installed, or save a few bucks by
ordering an eMac with just 128 MB of RAM and then adding more myself.
Apple charges a premium for RAM. OTOH, you know the RAM is exactly to spec.
What I personally would do is bump the emac to 256MB and then buy a 512MB sparately
But then again, i consider anything less than 256MB to be essentially useless.
So, has anyone out there added memory to an eMac? Does anyone have an opinion about how hard it is?
Pretty straightforward, actually.
Is it do-able for an amateur like me?
It's no harder, and in some ways easier, than adding RAM to a Wintel PC.
(I've installed RAM in beige desktop Macs, but never so much as looked
inside an eMac or iMac. I would be relying entirely on the instructions
on Apple's website.) Or would I be better off just paying an extra $100
or $150 to get the RAM pre-installed?
If you are at all hesitant, have Apple do it and get 512MB. It's not a huge premium, and you will then have the option of perhaps adding another 256-512 later on.
