If so, why not use them all the time.
Is there some disadvantage to using an image?
etc...

I used carbon copy cloner the first time and it worked great on two separate external HDs.
Now I have two questions.
1) When it clones, it puts everything on the ext. HD exactly as it appears on the main HD. However, since the ext. HD is large and roomy, I'd like to copy a second computer (the iBook) to it as well. However, unless I can put one or both copies inside a folder, I'm afraid the second will copy over some of the same items of the first and make a mess. Can this be done--clone two HDs to the same ext. HD?
make a IMAGE on the drive with the second drive's info
