Just had to say that these are among the best written directions I've ever seen.
If you put <> around your long URL's they stand a greater chance of working.
Hi Carol, I don't know if you got an answer to your question off-list, but I'll post this here to possibly benefit others.
What I had to do was to restart in OS 9, then go to Epson's website and download the driver for my 740. Here is the address:

Watch the word-wrap, it's a long URL. When you get to that page, click on the model of your printer and scroll to the bottom of the next page that appears. The last one is the driver you want. There are two updaters directly above the last one on the page, you can download those too, if you want, but you can probably get it to print without them.
Double click the download and install the driver, but don't be fooled with the result of the double click. Even tho' it will tell you that installation was successful, what it really did was to place a new folder on your desktop with the actual driver installer. Open that folder and double click that installer and follow the prompts. When you have restarted, go to the Chooser, click the 740 icon on the left, click on the name of the port that then appears on the right (it will probably say that it is connected to USB Port 1) and turn on Background Printing at the bottom of the window. By the way, make sure your printer is connected and turned on before you start installing.
Close everything up and try test printing from any OS 9 app, such as SimpleText. If everything prints okay, restart in OS X, launch classic and try printing from SimpleText again. You should be good to go. Cheers, John
