I bought a summer 2000 iMac, back when snow was unique and "chic", I am
kinda sad they adopted snow as their new "beige" but that's another
thought.

If you remember those are the ones that were hyped as the quiet
fan-less models, right quiet... I am fairly certain that the loud
humming is the hard drive spinning, if I were to upgrade my hard
drive(unlikely, considering money) would that calm the noise down?

Yes. That's exactly what I did with mine -- I replaced the noisy stock HD (a 60GB 5400RPM) with a 120GB 7200 8MB cache Western Digital. Now the machine is almost completely silent. Heaven.

I put the original drive in a Firewire case which is in itself rather noisy (fan noise), but I only fire it up to do backups.
