installing 9

i have an iMac 400.  it is running 10.26.  os 9 is not installed.  i 
have installation cds for 9 though.  i can't run the install from X 
because the installer is a 9 program.  i can boot from cd, and install 
there, but is says i must do a clean install.  does this mean it will 
replace os X or just a clean install of 9??  will it wipe my HS??  i 
want to keep X and not lose settings and all of that, but i would like 
to have 9 available in case i ever need it.  help is appreciated.
