delayed rise

I have an iMac 400 running 10.26 512mb ram 10gb hd.  when i wake the 
system up there is a delay of about 2 min before i can do certain 
things like reconnect to internet.  do i have a setting messed up, or 
what.  i'm not sure what else to put in here to help anyone understand 
the problem.  any advice would be great.
