Our iMac is one of the original bondi tray loaders,
and we have 196 meg o ram, since this device and this
program were used on pre-G3 machines, I'm not really
worried that we don't have enough juice to run this.
Keep in mind I'm only using 8.6...

STOP. There's your problem. Well, that and using crappy software/capture devices. Upgrade to 9.x already!

I would recommend that you spend about $300-400 and do the following:

1. Upgrade the iMac with the HARMONi upgrade from Sonnet. Not only will you have a faster machine, you will obtain a Firewire port (vital for good quality video).

2. Replace one or both of those memory modules with a bigger one. Shoot for 256MB or better if possible.

3. Replace the HD either internally or externally (via that new FW port) with a FAST LARGE one.

We have an irez CapSure USB, and are trying to use
ReelEyes 1.2 (full version) that came on the install
disk for the CapSure device. Everytime I try to
select an audio source in ReelEyes, I crash hard.

Junk!!

In you insist on sticking to the iRez (also junk IMHO), at least try downloading BTV from macupdate.com or elsewhere and give that a whirl as your capture software.

You'd be a lot better off (assuming you get the FW upgrade) to buy/borrow a digital camcorder that has analog "pass through." Best of both worlds ... you have a digital camera that can capture direct to iMovie and you have a device that can transfer video from VHS etc through the camera and into DV format.

The problem with USB capture devices is a) at best, they capture sub-VHS quality, and b) they're never at their best. They generally suck pretty hard.

Honestly, if you're going to work with video more than say ONCE, I'd strongly recommend you rethink the plan to use such an ill-suited machine for the job. You'd have an easier time working with a Quadra 840AV and produce something better-looking than you will with the setup you presently have.

Better iMacs are sub-$500 now (and eMacs are sub-$800 if you're willing to go refurb) and I can tell you that despite popular myth, you CAN do quality video work on a g3 or entry-level g4. Not quite pro-level of course, but worthwhile.

Thinking that I may have to go to another capture
program, like BTC. Heard that an early version of
iMovie works under 8.6, but have no idea where one
might find a download of that.

It came with your iMac, or should have. It won't work with MPEG1 files anyway, though.

The iTunes Music Store has sold ten MILLION songs in four months, more than all other legal download services have sold in TWO YEARS. If they can maintain that average over the course of a year, Apple will sell more music than any other retail music source. And that's BEFORE you add in countries outside the US, and Windows users. Woah.
