I wouldn't go as far as saying it has poor performance, mine does very well for itself, I'd say yes they are considerably slower though. This is due to the slower CPU speed, slower Bus, and slower video card. They also do not have the facility for USB 2.0, Airport Extreme or internal Bluetooth (although this can be added to any USB port).
I like mine, and with the recent update they should be at least $250 cheaper or something at most retailers trying to shift old stocks, and they are gorgeous little machines even so.
If you are looking to spend $1200-1500 and have a half-decent monitor you might want to consider also a PowerMac G4, they are still available in 1GHz and 1.25GHz from most vendors and are marginally faster than the iMac and upgradable. I'd have had one if Apple would have given me the interest free credit on it but they wouldn't so i couldn't afford one.
