That's what happened here! I fixed it - with persistent restarting and the programmer's button until I got enough screen to reinstall system 9.2 and start over. I was then able to bring in the firmware upgrade (4.1.9) which recovered the computer. *Then* I reinstalled 10.2 and it works.
Shoulda read the instructions first - or asked the experts here, like...
Well, I'm not complaining as I managed to buy a cheap iMac 400DV due to its "magnet damaged" screen... :o)
