Hi all,
I have a Sage iMac (450mhz/20G/320ram) that I just bought a couple days ago.
I've installed OS 9.2.2 on it, and attempted to install OS X.0.3.
Tip1: Trow away your copy of 10.0.3 - Anything prior to 10.1.5 is a total waste of time - especially if you are trying to get into OS X for the first time.
And forgive my
lack of understanding (I'll blame it on a difficult pregnancy and subsequent
5 months of sleep deprivation... major loss of brain cells) but is Jaguar an
update - or an actual upgrade that needs to be purchased even if one already
owns X? And Panther?
Jaguar and Panther (not out until later this year) are fully new versions of OS X. You can either upgrade 10.1 (not recommended - it's best to do clean installs for every major revision of OS X) or just buy them and install them. Your iMac is of a reasonable spec so it will not struggle with either, and if you have a G4 also then if you like OS X you can upgrade that.
And would it be the 'Family Pack' I need to buy in order to install Jaguar (or Panther) on more than one machine?
Technically yes, but in actual fact...
I would first like to get OS X running on the Sage iMac, and eventually make
the switch on my G4. The G4 does have some version of OS X installed
(10.1.5) - but I gave up on it, as it had some problems when switching back
to OS 9 - and since the G4 is my work machine, I can't be losing all that
work time for troubleshooting.
I've tried to make sense of the upgrade path on apple's website, but it
leaves me baffled. Could someone steer me clearly? And keep it simple ; )
Major revisions (10.0, 10.1 etc.) are totally independant. You can upgrade from one Major Revsion to another (say from 10.1.x to Jaguar) but I personally recommend against it. 10.0 -> 10.1 was a free update. 10.2 (Jaguar) and the upcoming 10.3 (Panther) must be purchased at a cost of $129 (or your local equivalent).
Minor revisions (10.1.1, 10.1.2, 10.1.3 etc) are updates to the Major Revision downloaded either over the web or via Software Update.
Off-the-shelf versions of OS X are generally the latest minor revision that supports all currently available machine (was 10.2.3 until the Expo - is now 10.2.8)
My advice in the current situation would be to hang around and see if you can install 10.1.5 on your iMac, then buy Panther at the end of the year and try that on the iMac. 10.1.5 will teach you the basics, Panther will bring you bang-up-to-date and also make you realise how much better it is these days compared to the last time you tried it.
