Main computer is a G4/500 (single proc.) with an HP1200 laser hooked directly to the computer via USB cable.

Second computer is a 333 iMac connected to G4 via an ethernet router.

Both computers run on OS 9.2.2.

I would like to use the HP1200 laser printer from the iMac.

I assume that I must have a desktop printer set up on the iMac because if I have USB printer sharing turned on on both computers and I try to print from the iMac, I get an error message that says "... no desktop printer exists for this spool file." So I have tried creating each kind of desktop printer that seems appropriate (i.e., "Printer (LPR)", Printer (USB", and "HP Printer (USB)") all to no avail.

I have a book titled "Mac OS 9 - The Missing Manual" that states that when you are sharing USB printers over a TCP/IP network (which I _think_ I am since the computers are connected via ethernet), you must use the Printer (LPR) description. That made sense; I did that and inserted the ip address for the G4/HP1200 printer and it still didn't work.

The one step that never seems to work is when, in the USB printer sharing control panel (on the iMac), under the "network printers" tab, the HP LaserJet 1200 on G4 will show up under the local network, and I can 'choose' it, but nothing seems to happen after that. The HP1200 does not show up on the list as a networked printer.

I looked at www.threemacs.com's web site (http://www.atpm.com/network/printing/usb.htm) and it mentioned one issue that might be my problem but I don't fully understand what the author meant. That article states that to share USB printers, you must use TCP/IP as the network connection (configured from the AppleTalk control panel). When I go to my AppleTalk control panel my only options are Ethernet (what I now use) and 'remote only.'

This is frustrating. Is there a web-site somewhere that would walk me through this?
