I have personally done that.  

Step 1:  Kiss it goodbye (just prepare for total loss).
Step 2:  Wash it in a dishwasher with heat off and a drop of detergent.
Step 3:  Blow it out with a compressor.  
Step 4:  Let it sit for about a week. 

Worked for me.  It's as good as new.  I still have it.
