The reason that I have so many G3's is that, well...they're so dang CHEAP! But that means that I can let one (actually three in my case) be dedicated to the playing of music; this allows the others to be completely free of that task and thus never get bogged down as you describe. Since I do 90% of my surfing and email on my clamshell iBook, and it is on the network by way of Airport, I don't have to wag an audio cable around either. I control the G3's with Timbuktu from the iBook; their audio outputs are direct to power amps/speakers in a couple of rooms. 10.2.6 and iTunes 4 on everything means any computer on my network can play any other computer's music library...this allows me to keep doowop on one and classical on the other (they don't mix well...) but yet play whichever suits my mood from whichever room I'm in. It's decadent...

And the whole shebang cost less than a G4...

I'd concur totally with that. I only bought a G4/800 iMac because I do odd bits of heavyweight graphics work in Photoshop and Illustrator. My B&W G3 is absolutely fine for e-mail and surfing and even Office v.X (if I remember to upgrade to Office 10.1.5!). I found MP3 playing, and especially AAC playing (MPEG4) in iTunes did hammer the CPU a bit though - I couldn't reallly play music and use Office.
