iCal 'Open File' Alert

I have a problem of sorts with iCal (1.5.1). I set it to open an 
AppleScript that selects my General playlist in iTunes and starts 
iTunes playing. It works OK when my iMac is awake and I am working but 
it if it asleep it won't wake up to alert me of the alarm. Does this 
only work with 'message' and 'message with sound' alarms?
