I have an iMac graphite 600 and a 17" flat screen iMac. While I was waiting for CompUSA to put Panther on the shelf for sale, I purchased an Airport Extreme Base Station and Airport Extreme Card (for 17" iMac), an Airport Card and adapter (for slot loading iMacs) and wireless cards for two Window notebooks. First I installed all the cards, plugged the base station into my cable modem router, then loaded Panther. When I turned everything on it all worked without any hassles.

My reception and transmission on all machines is excellent across 50 feet and two walls. All internet functions work as fast as a direct wired system as far as I can tell. Since I'm still gathering information on setting up a software base station myself, I would also be interested in any advice from the list on setting up a true network environment.

I have a new to me iMac graphite 500 mhz DV. It apparently has a connector for an airport card.

How is the reception and transmission from iMacs such as this?

How does such an iMac work as a software base station? I have a cable modem and am considering setting things up to use my PB3400 in the living room and/or bedroom. Each location is going through one wall and the distance is at most 40 feet.
