Subject: Airport in a Graphite iMac

I have a new to me iMac graphite 500 mhz DV. It apparently has a
connector for an airport card.

It does, but you need an adapter to make the card fit/work...an extra $15 or so.

How is the reception and transmission from iMacs such as this?

Great, I'm on an airport network with my 400SEDV and have no problems.

How does such an iMac work as a software base station?... the distance is at most 40 feet.

40 feet is not a problem at all, my network is spread out more than that and on different floors. Setting up your iMac as a base station is easy and works quite well (as long as you don't mind keeping the iMac on and online), but depends on the operating system...9 or 10?
Since going wireless at the beginning of this year, I would not want to go back to wires!
Good luck,
Phil
