I just thought that you might like to know the followup to what I know about my iMac that would sound like it was starting up, but the screen was black and it shut down just after the chimes and the green light would stay on.
After much soul searching and internet searching.....I finally gave in and let the dream of getting $125 (half my warrantee money) back if I didn't use any service work for 5 years. I was 4 years into it.... ;o) Well, I took my machine in to the place I bought it and they sent it off to the serivce place about 350 miles from here. I sent a very detailed letter (2 pages) with my machine. I prayed that my data on the hard drive was not lost as it had been probably 6 months since my last back up. They emailed me: "We have ordered the part for your Imac. I do not think that the data has been lost. I will know for sure when I get the part installed. The part ordered is a deflection board, that is what supplies power to the display and other parts of the system. The part should arrive Wed. 29th" I phones them and asked if I had not had my warrantee about what would this have cost me. They told me between $400-500. They said that usually they can see where there has been a "blow-out" due to power surge, but there was no indication of it on my machine. I have since done researach and found out that the problem is common enough that it has been named the "the green light of death" on Apple's Tech Exchange Forums. Common symptoms of the problem are a screen that remains black--they just die. Black screen, green light. I found a reference to a "British tech" answering what he would charge to put in a new deflection board and it was from $450 - 500 US. So I guess I am glad that I bought the $250 warrantee with the machine, since Apple only gives you one year. They also told me that they would do all the upgrades and updates that Apple recommends for my computer before they return it to me. They will run and work with it another day to make sure there are no other problems and I might have my computer back by the end of the week or early next week..... I am very pleased to say the least...... but will keep my fingers crossed until I have it home and working. BTW..... about 2 years ago, I bought an iBook off eBay to have as a back up in case anything went wrong with my iMac (DV SE). I am sure glad I did as I would have to go all the way back to my Performa 6300--but I could!!
