Have you tried resetting the PRAM?

Just have, but no difference (I did read that in an Apple article) --- With a bootable CD in the drive I start up holding down C, nothing.

I start up holding down Option and the blue startup disk selector
screen appears but there are no selectable disks.
---
I have even swapped the IDE cable from the working iMac.

Is there a typical IDE bus fault or something? I've never heard
of anything nor have I seen this before.
