With that evidence I'd say 90% sure the ATA circuitry
has died somewhere.

Sounds likely to me too.


Is there anything one can do?

I have a pink iMac 400DV which may end up getting a new
jacket. My wife and son(!) likes the FlowerPower case. The
biggest decision is whether to keep the DVD or use the CDRW...

Anyway, I'll test a little more (maybe receive some more tips)
and if all else fails, I'll swap the motherboards/cases.

I feel sure there'll be a few more questions/discussions on
this topic as I start digging...   :o)
