It's not supposed to have to be done, but I find that following the
installation of third party software it is sometimes required. Permissions
determine who can read or write to a file; if they are not right, often a
program will not run.

You can repair permissions by running the disk utility's disk first aid on
your boot drive and then using the repair permissions option. Takes a short
while, and it's harmless.

It can speed up things if there are any problems - the program will report
back to you on what it has done, if anything.
