Sometimes when I put the iMac (G3 600MHz Summer 2001) to sleep, the display goes to sleep but the machine just freezes. It cannot be awakened and an attempt to restart it using the restart button results in a chime, some hard drive clicks and nothing more. It can be shut off by holding the power button in; then it can be started normally. This happens once every fourth or fifth time that I try to put the machine to sleep.

I have tried zapping the PRAM and resetting the Open Firmware, removing the aftermarket RAM chip, and disconnecting all peripherals (per instruction from Apple Tech Support). None of this worked.

The problem began about a month ago when I did an upgrade installation of OS 10.2 over 10.1.5, which caused many problems. Amost all other problems were resolved by erasing the OS X partition of my hard disk and re-installing 10.2. (I am now up to 10.2.8) The one other remaining problem is that the keyboard menu sometimes disappears from the menu bar.

Any suggestions? I intend to re-initialize the disk and re-install everything.
