What are anyones experiences of failure rates in Seagate drives? I have a 40GB U5 I've had since 2000 and it's still running strong. Has been running 24/7 in a server for over a year, also got daily torture in my PC for a year when it was new, as well as bouncing between various Macs. I tend to find that while the numbers are not as impressive newer Seagate drives (esp. the Barracuda IV and 7200. series) tend to run cooler (which makes a change as they used to run hotter than anyone elses) and quieter than other drives. My Barracuda SATA in my PC is barely audible and neither is the U6 in my iMac.
I have just got my paws on a Maxtor 40GB and I'm impressed (the only other Maxtor I have is the original 12GB out of my G3 and it whines something terrible - it's sat on a shelf ATM) with how fast and quiet it is. I'd thus relucantly have to agree Maxtor are a pretty good make, and don't have a reputation for producing howlers :).
Currently I have put a hold on recommending anything by ExcelStor (was IBM). My dad has a very late IBM Deskstar 120GXP and it runs so loud, even at idle, I thought it was dying when I first heard it. He has just bought another ExcelStor 80GB but I dunno what that ones like. I have to agree with Kyle Western Digital drives just suck. I've seen newer drives turn over some impressive figures but figures mean nothing when your hard disk toasts itself. I wouldn't put one in a server if you paid me.
FWIW I have a Fujitsu 10GB that has been to hell and back (lost the upper 2.5GB to the evil hard disk munching bug in the Rev. 1 B&W G3 so it's now a 7.5GB) for 4 years and still works silver side up. I'm considering replacing it however as it's so old it should have grandkids by now ;-). Mind you I have a 20MB Seagate 5.25" in my collection of odd old hardware that is 15 years old and still works fine!
