But if you only need to transfer files occasionally, there are plenty of
free, slightly less convenient ways to do it.

Personally, when I want to send a file (or folder full of files) between the
computers on my network, I just use the file transfer features built into
AOL Instant Messenger.  I do this even between Macs, because having the OS's
File Sharing feature turned on really seems to slow down the computers, and
I'm usually signed on to AIM anyway.
