The problem with being on top of the hill is that sooner or later somebody is going to knock you off. Apple had their few 15 minutes of king of the hill and maybe will again sometime, but lets move on. The Anthlon is clearly faster, like it or not. Who cares? Next week a new flavor of the month will arrive and Anthlon will no longer be king of the hill. Apple will still be the better choice, Ghz king or not.

Actually, no. I checked. No 64-bit Athlon computers for sale at either
location.

Wow. Clearwater has them. ;-)

I should clarify -- I didn't check if they had the chip or the MBs. I wanted to see a name-brand machine that was using the Opteron (which sounds like some rejected name for a Godzilla opponent). They didn't have any.

I asked if they had any software that took advantage of a 64-bit chip (in the way that certain libraries of programs for the G5 do). They said that to the best of their knowledge, the answer was no.

While home-builders (which, despite misconceptions to the contrary, actually make up a tiny percentage of PC buyers) might be able to slap together an Operton-based system, most PC buyers don't really see this as a viable (or worthwhile, seeing as how none of their software will be enhanced by it) option at the moment. IMHO, 64-bit on the PC has a ways to go -- probably about two years' worth of way to go.

Apple, OTOH, seems have a clear advantage in that regard, and time enough to really take advantage of that if they handle it right.
