I'm going to be upgrading to Panther (OS X 10.3.x) soon and I've been thinking of installing my current version of Jaguar (OS X 10.2.8) on a partition of my FireWire hard drive as an aid to assist me in helping friends and family when they call for tech support from me.
I've got OS X 10.2.6 on the DVD that came with my Flat Panel iMac to use as a starting point, but what I'd like to know is if there is any way to re-install all the updates that I've previously installed on my iMac's hard drive (through Software Update) on to the FireWire hard drive without having to download them again over dialup?
Yes, I think you could do that, as long as you downloaded and saved all the update packages, rather than just getting the updates done via the SU interface.
But, seems to me that the simplest thing to do would be to use Carbon Copy Cloner to create a clone of your current Jaguar OS on your ext FW drive.
