Lately the screen on my Rev A iMac has been getting a bit shakey and I'm starting to wonder if it's on the way out. After having a look on the 'net I've found lots of examples of people moving the parts from an imac into another case (One guy built his into a 21 inch monitor) and plug an external monitor into the plug round the back thats normally covered by the iMac case.
At the current prices LCD monitor are looking pretty good and I was just wondering if anyone has tried one with an iMac (and the right adapter) and what things I should look out for.
I am running a 21in Apple Studio Display off my 333. Pretty simple to do and
no problem after finding the correct adapter. I have a procedure, saved from
the old imac2day site (now gone).
Now, as a hacker of older Macs as I am, what would be REALLY neat would bif you could ditch the 15" tube and the PAV board that are failing and replace the whole lot with a Mini-ATX PSU and then buy a low priced 15" LCD and strip it out if the housing and place it on the frame. Nice project and if it was very viable it might be worth doing it as a service as PAV boards seem to go a lot on G3 iMacs, I bet for the cost of a new PAV board you could pay for half the parts.
Sorry did I get carried away?
