Excellent review in Consumer Reports, September 2003. In your price range
at $150, is Lexmark X5150 All-In-One with good marks. Best Buy, with better
marks, is Hewlett Packard PSC 1210 all-in-one, at $100.

There may be newer models now. But best to read the article at the library,
or get it on line at CR's web site.

Same CR issue has very good article "When Good Software Goes Bad." How to
protect your data.

It should be noted that CR is strangely, yet notoriously, anti-Mac -- ergo something that gets a good review there may or may not work with a Mac system (they rarely bother to test).

For a company that claims to prize consumer-friendliness and ease of use, Apple is routinely excoriated (usually on extremely flawed assumptions) except in the area of customer service, where their readers informed them years ago (and have every year since) that Apple is tops in CS.

One example (I swear I am not making this up) from a review years ago: the original iMac (IIRC) was given a minus because of it's inability to run Windows.
