FWIW, years ago I trusted CR on it's review of a refrigerator. The thing was a dog. When I asked a repairman about the discrepancy, he mentioned that it's owned by subsidiaries of several appliance companies.
I don't think that's correct. CR is owned by Consumer's Union, which is a registered not-for-profit organisation.
Not long ago, a good, trustworthy friend quit CR because they asked her, a senior researcher, to falsify a report, because it would be "bad for their bottom line" . Haven't trusted them since....
I'm always disappointed to hear such things. And our leaders wonder why we've gotten so cynical.
