I use a 700 MHz eMac at work and a 400 MHz iMac DV at home. I've gotta say that even in an office environment, I do find the eMac's fan a bit of a distraction after the fanless iMac - although I'm prettty sick of the hard drive whine on that one, too. Can't comment on the upgradability as I haven't tinkered with it yet.
Screen wise, the extra space is great, but I don't think the quality is as good as my iMac. There's an amount of distortion that I can't shake off with any geometry adjustment (I've seen this on both the eMacs I've used) and occasionally some slight flicker. I only ever put it to sleep, so don't find the crummy power button position too much of a problem. Mind you, it does seem prone to kernel panics, but that's perhaps my shoddy housekeeping/game playing at fault there. If you're set on buying an eMac, though, I would heartily recommend buying the tilt and swivel base. Mind you, I'm 6"3", so I do need that extra tilt. Myself, I'm saving for a 17"/20" iMac or - if I can hold out long enough - a G5, though there's something about having an iMac that's so much more pleasing than a PowerMac, as I guess a lot of you would probably agree.
