Well, in a way I guess. From: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> This may seem to be an odd question...
why are there currently offered both Powerbooks and iBooks?
Marketing reasons?
Apple has four hardware "product lines" now: 1. Consumer computers 2. Professional computers 3. Enterprise Servers 4. iPod family
The iMac, eMac and iBook make up the "consumer computer" category. These are all great all-around machines, with plenty of consumer-oriented software on em at the lowest prices Apple can manage. Their lack of internal expansion means they are very limited when it comes to certain types of vertical-market activities like pro video.
The towers (Powermacs) and Powerbooks are Apple's "professional line." They are more expensive and come with LESS software, but are generally beefier (more powerful) with more connections and expansion possibilities. The G5, for example, can handle 8GB of memory -- the only Mac that can do that. This is why I keep telling people that G5 iMacs/eMacs are NOT "right around the corner" -- apart from the myriad issues involved, Apple has vested reasons to want pros to use Pro machines, and consumers to get less-powerful but more "fun" machines. Eventually we'll get G5-powered iMacs, but I suspect it will be a while -- and they will be significantly slower than the "Pro" machines.
