Since CD drives use an optical lens, they can get messed up of you use them in dusty conditions. One cheap/easy fix would be to try a lens cleaning disc. It's basically a normal CD, with some tiny soft brushes attached to the bottom. When you put it in your drive, the brushes are supposed to brush any dust buildup off the lens.
