Because you have a slot-loading CD drive, you cannot replace it with
a CDRW.
There just aren't any.

Apple shipped a lot of slot loading iMacs with 8/4/24X CD-RWs built in,
didn't they? I don't know if these can be swapped among all the slot
loading
iMacs or not though. Or if you can find them anywhere. I just looked
on eBay
"iMac slot" and saw DVD and CD drives, but no writers. I'd think that
the
CD-RWs would show up occasionally as people parted out broken machines
at
least.

I wound up buying a USB CDRW, but that is very very slow.

You must have the one model of slot load iMac without FireWire. There are FireWire CD burners that are very fast.

The iMac uses Powerbook drives, doesn't it? I know you can get combo
drives from MacResQ for the TiBook for about $150, and a faster drive
from Logic Supply for the same price. Both are natively supported in
OS9 and OSX. I thought I read that all the slot-loaders can play DVD's
(but didn't come with DVD drives) on the LEM site, but I don't see that
any more.
USB CD burning has a max speed of 4x.

This is news to me. It seems that the TiBook drives should be smaller and
perhaps even work on a different voltage that old CRT iMacs. Can anybody
confirm that these works? $150 would be certainly worth it!

OK, what drive mechanism is mounted in the CRT iMacs? I have a FP SuperDrive, so I know that's a regular half-height drive. Someone check out System Profiler and post what drive is listed, please?
All laptop drives are still the same width, in fact my TiBook has a mounting bracket around the drive that makes it even bigger.
