I seem to have a constant problem with the networking in Panther which is, as far as I can tell, a software bug. I just wondered if anyone else had had it and/or solved it.
The 'Network' Icon in the finder is supposed to display a list of locally available machines sharing files in the 'Local' section. On my G3/400 and my iMac G4 they keep losing all the server in this list (SMB and AFP) completely and 'Local' is empty. Only a reboot seems to solve it.
I then discovered by accident that these can all be accessed also by using 'Go to Folder' and typing in
/var/automount/Network/Local
And Lo-and-Behold all my servers are there, yet not in the Network thingy in the sidebar.
Odd - No?

Panther has two different ways of connecting - some things just don't show up in the network pane.
See Apple document 107804 for more info on the two ways of connecting (go to and network). I can't tell why things show up or not, some things are different each time. FWIW, I can never connect to anything running OS9, 8 or 7 from an X machine. I can connect up, but not down.
