Greetings,

My friend has a blue imac.
350 Mhz, 192 mb ram, 6g hard drive, os 9.2.2, slot-loading cdrom drive, original
matching blue apple
keyboard

The cdrom drive usually can not read an inserted cdrom. the cdrom drive makes noise
but does not
usually read any cd.

If a cdrom has been inserted and you attempt to boot or restart, the boot sequence
gets part way
through the icon parade and then tries to access the cdrom. Then the boot sequence can
not continue
because it is stuck there trying to read the cdrom. It can not boot from the imac
restore cd.

We are trying to rule out a software problem before we attempt to disassemble the
machine to get at
the cdrom drive. os 9.2.2 was installed over a version of 9.1 many months ago. He does
not remember
if he had a cdrom drive problem before the software change. We booted with the os 9
base extensions
only but the cdrom still did not work.

So how would you proceed with trying to reload the system software if the cdrom ain't
working?
(obviously i can't just hook up an external scsi hard drive or external scsi cdrom and
boot like in
the old days.) is acquiring an external usb cdrom drive and hooking it up the only
other way to try
to restore the system software?

or is it your experience that this is probably a cdrom drive problem and hence get
another internal
slot-loading cdrom drive?
if that is the recommendation, where is a good source for these slot-loading cdrom
drives? (ebay,
swap-list, post to this list....???)

many thanks in advance,

stephen kenda
