So how would you proceed with trying to reload the system software if the cdrom ain't working?
(obviously i can't just hook up an external scsi hard drive or external scsi cdrom and boot like in
the old days.) is acquiring an external usb cdrom drive and hooking it up the only other way to try
to restore the system software?

I have a cable that I connect to an external SCSI drive that converts it to a USB connector. I haven't started up with it but have used it to transfer files to my grand-daughters iMac. If you can start up with an external USB CDR then you should be able to do it with a cable converter. The cable may be a lot cheaper then a new CD player of decent speed.
