Hi folks,

I want to replace the hard drive inside my beloved grape iMac DV/400 (Maxtor DiamondMax 40 ATA/66, 10.2 GB/2 MB, 5400 RPM). The iMac specs say that a 3.5", third-height (1"), Ultra DMA IDE (AKA Ultra-DMA/33 and ATA-4) drive is supported.

I'm looking at two candidates in particular:
(1) An IBM Deskstar 41.1 GB/512 MB, 5400 RPM,
     rated 5V 300mA, 12V 400mA
     (IDE, model DTLA-305040);
(2) A Maxtor DiamondMax Plus 9, 120 GB/8 MB, 7200 RPM,
     rated 5V 670mA, 12V 960mA
     (ATA/133, model 6Y120P0).

I figure the IBM, being the same speed as the present drive, may be a good choice, though the 8 MB buffer and higher capacity of the Maxtor are very attractive. BUT... the nice fast Maxtor requires over twice the power of the IBM! Will this exceed the specs on the iMac? Can the iMac supply the necessary power? I know some external housings seem to have problems with the power requirements of these fast drives, and I'm worried about burning out the power supply of my iMac, or causing other component damage. Any of you techies out there have problems with the power supply of iMacs dying?

Thanks in advance...

--Jim.
