Hi: I think I have occasionally run into this situation on my original Bondi Blue iMac, altho not for many months now. One thing I found, when I was getting this business of the CD-ROM drive not being recognized, was that it WOULD recognize the original startup CD or CD's which came with it, but just would not seem to boot up from many other start-up CD's I had which should have worked. (Don't forget you need to hold the C key down if you want to FORCE the iMac to boot from its CD-ROM drive.)
I do not recall exactly what I was able to do, once I got the iMac to boot from its original OS Installer CD. I certainly did not want to format the drive or install the original system. I have a feeling that, once the iMac got to the point where it would boot from the original installer CD, I found that it would then boot up OK from other newer startup CD's like Disk Warrior. Disk Warrior, in fact, is where I wanted to go, because I think the whole problem was really coming from an internal hard drive problem which Disk Warrior was able to resolve.
So, my advice would be to track down a set of original Bondi Blue iMac CD's. if you didn't get them with your purchase, see if you can find a local Mac User Group, contact someone on their Executive, and ask if they could put the word out to their membership that you would love to borrow a set. Worst thing that can happen is they might ask you to join first!! Not an all bad deal.
