I have a problem. I have a slot -loading Summer 2001 iMac 600 mHz running OS 9.2.2 and OS 10.1.2., as equipped at the factory. I normally use 9.2.2 because I'm familiar with it, it's stable, non-glitzy and all my peripherals (save one) work with it.
I bought a digital camera at Xmas and then rebooted in OS X to download photos with iPhoto (fantastic app!).
Last week, I went to do the same but when the machine restarted in OS X, the screen was black with rather terse lines of white text. I futzed with that for a while to no avail. Because the two OS's are in the same partition ( or more accurately, there is no partitioning ) my options were limited.
I tried re-installing OS X from the CD that came with the computer. On restart I got a blue screen, but only got the icons for the internet connection, volume and clock in the upper right hand corner of the screen. Nothing else.
I was able to get back to 9.2.2 and did all the things suggested in the MIssing Manual, the Apple support website etc.
I did the System 9 font corruption check, restarting with only factory keyboard and mouse attached, checking to see that there weren't smudges on the install CD (there were, but that wasn't the problem) and going through the various Unix commands suggested at the Apple site.
I thought I might have installed 10.0 over an upgraded system, as warned by the Apple site.(I think that warning should be in a more prominent spot) But I have 10.1.2 and that isn't listed as a problem.
I know I should bite the bullet and upgrade to Panther, but dammit, this setup worked at Christmas, and it should work now. In searching through all the literature, sites etc, I didn't come across symptoms which were exactly like mine, so I'm not surprised that the proposed solutions haven't worked.
Long story short - can anyone suggest something I might have overlooked? Otherwise I'll borrow a firewire drive, backup everything and reinstall from scratch.
Thanks
