I would be curious about the diagnosis.....the cpu rarely is the problem....more likely wouold be a power supply....but you mention no symtoms.

As regards recovering data....as long as there is no problem with your hard drive, it is then fully functional and would work in another computer or a Firewire external case available for well under $100.

If you have access to a G4 tower....ie a Quicksilver that has just a single HD then your Hd can be very simply installed on a temperary basis and your data transfered to the media of your choise....etc....
