Phone gave perfect dial tone on line which was in use on iMac. Used Ext. Mgr. to de-activate some exts. I'm not expert, but have been using Macs about 17 years, and don't believe I de-activated any which would preclude internet activity. Modem still would not detect dial tone. Modem dead?? Modem built into mother board??? Cost to repair??? How can I bypass internal modem and use external Zoom 56K left over from olden days?
From your description, I would say it's likely that a power surge down the phone line or some other gremlin (maybe dust?) has killed your modem. Had any bad/unusual weather lately? Got a UPS on that machine?
Of course, from here it's impossible to be certain, but this much I can tell you: if it IS a dead modem, you should look at your broadband options rather than contemplate repairing it.
I've heard that there are USB external modems that might work with the Mac, but have yet to see such a creature in actual service. Broadband is still more expensive than dialup (unless you count the cost of a second phone line, in which case it's actually cheaper), but the speed and convenience make it VERY worth it to me. Hopefully that option is available in your area.
