I have physically done it in a Rev A iMac. My CD ROM drive was dead, so I 
replaced the hard drive's cable with a two device IDE cable, set the hard 
drive as Master, and connected an IDE CD ROM drive set as slave.

It worked just fine, although I was not able to boot from the CD ROM (but 
it did read from it just fine).

Granted, I never attempted to fit all this into the case, I was using it 
just for diagnostics, so my iMac was well taken apart when used like 
this. But it did work just fine with two devices in a Master/Slave 
configuration on the hard drive's IDE bus.
